Plant virus evolution under strong drought conditions results in a transition from parasitism to mutualism

چکیده

Significance Viruses are seen as selfish pathogens that harm their hosts to ensure own survival. However, metagenomic studies drawing a new picture in which viruses present everywhere and not always associated diseases. A classic observation plant pathology is the outcome of infection depends on environmental conditions. Here, using experimental evolution, we show relationship between virus its natural host can evolve from pathogenic mutualistic under severe drought While viral strains evolved normal watering conditions increased virulence, drought-evolved confer plants with greater resistance drought. We this transition mutualism complex reorganization hormone-induced signaling pathways changes gene expression.

Mutualism–parasitism paradigm synthesized from results of root-endophyte models

Plant tissues host a variety of fungi. One important group is the dark septate endophytes (DSEs) that colonize plant roots and form characteristic intracellular structures - melanized hyphae and microsclerotia. The DSE associations are common and frequently observed in various biomes and plant taxa. Reviews suggest that the proportion of plant species colonized by DSE equal that colonized by AM...

Mutualism and parasitism: the yin and yang of plant symbioses.

Plants are solar-powered sugar factories that feed a multitude of other organisms. Many of these organisms associate directly with host plants to gain access to the plant's photosynthates. Such symbioses encompass a wide collection of styles ranging from mutualistic to commensal and parasitic. Among these, the mutualistic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is one of the evolutionarily oldest...

Parallel Compensatory Evolution Stabilizes Plasmids across the Parasitism-Mutualism Continuum

Plasmids drive genomic diversity in bacteria via horizontal gene transfer [1, 2]; nevertheless, explaining their survival in bacterial populations is challenging [3]. Theory predicts that irrespective of their net fitness effects, plasmids should be lost: when parasitic (costs outweigh benefits), plasmids should decline due to purifying selection [4-6], yet under mutualism (benefits outweigh co...

Mutualism, Parasitism, and Evolutionary Adaptation

Our investigations concern the role of symbiosis as an enabling mechanism in evolutionary adaptation. Previous work has illustrated how the formation of mutualist groups can guide genetic variation so as to enable the evolution of ultimately independent organisms that would otherwise be unobtainable. The new experiments reported here show that this effect applies not just in genetically related...

Evolution of plant parasitism among nematodes.

Despite extraordinary diversity of free-living species, a comparatively small fraction of nematodes are parasites of plants. These parasites represent at least three disparate clades in the nematode tree of life, as inferred from rRNA sequences. Plant parasites share functional similarities regarding feeding, but many similarities in feeding structures result from convergent evolution and have ...
